you're god damn right, after a few attempts and much mucking around, i finally got the NES i ordered for myself for Christmas working!

The problem was, as suspected, the 72-pin connector piece. I had tried previously two other times to bend them back in place, but no dice. This time i took extra special care to line up the pins with the connector bands and to my enjoyment it worked :)

the only other problem i had yet to fix was the controller... now, the controller i ordered online ended up not working at all in any way, so i decided to use my old SNES controller with the broken L and R buttons.

i got a few NES and SNES controller port schematics and matched up the wires and pulled out my trusty soldering iron (also ordered as part of my christmas gift to myself)

although incredibly hackish and looking disgusting, it all functions perfectly ^_^

now all i need to do is modify the controller port to so the connection doesn't break if i pull on the controller a bit, just to be safe. After that in the near future i'll probably get around to making/modifying a real NES controller port so i can disconnect the controller. I only hardwired it together temporarily because i'm very impatient ;)

all in all it was fun finally getting everything in order

and now, the obligatory glass of celebratory wine:

way to go eh :) did you get any of the sockets to put the eprom in or did you solder directly to the board? oh yeah, a quick note. when you use a 32kb eprom in place of a 16kb one.... remember to leave pin 27 disconnected or to connected to vcc....

you don't say, eh?

well there is one problem... that being a large gap in my knowledge about anything at all related to eprom burners in general and my own specific burner. I forgot to make sure i knew what i was doing before i bought it

by the way, i broke apart your oft-collected game:
cart.jpg

installed a socket, but i'm having trouble burning the chip (mostly because i have no idea what settings do and are required)

i was planning on just running a simple test program either dealing with sound or using gyromites' already existing chr-rom for any graphics.

one other thing has me wondering... i ordered an at29c512 which is exactly what inventory sheet shows, but the chip itself reads "28f512".. perhaps i'm missing something, are the two synonomous, did i get the wrong chip, am i just confusing myself?

Yes, both those units contained within the boxes still work beautifully. Still have all of the adaptors for them as well, including the coax->forks adaptors. One I got for Christmas back in 1989, the other used to belong to a friend, bought it off him for 5 manga volumes I don't read anymore about a year or two ago so I'd have a backup system. Yes, that's a power glove and a four score multitap on the left.

Also found some pretty good deals on stuff out here in Japan while I've been finishing off my degree this past semester. won an auction for a mint-condition original Famicom, a Super Famicom (with box an instructions), and a Japanese PS1 for $100 (bundled auction), picked up another Famicom unit for $14, and tracked down a top-loading version of the Famicom for $60 (bit steep, but it beats paying $90-110 on eBay for an NES top-loader...). All of the gear's tested and works just fine.

if you want, I can send you a controller input to NES piece (the part that the controller plugs into) and the end of an NES controller cord (the part that plugs in)

I don't care about money, as long as it doesn't cost me anything.

ah, yes. I was just going to code a small demo of my own to test on the cart with minimal graphics, but putting some proffesional (non-shitty sounding) tracks is a much much better idea
