SNPCFF3!

Wow.

Yet another Mario hack that is not funny and attempts to have a "mature" theme (despite the fact that maturity doesn't come from making as many references to excreta as possible in every sentence). Watch be utterly fucking unsurprised.

Hey, no need to be rough. The hack is nice. Altough, there is no need for mature content. You can make a good hack without it.

You mean there are smb1 hacks that don't involve a penis? I'm suprised.

I recently tried all hacks for Super Mario Bros.
There were just a few that involve a penis. Others were quite nice.

Well, SNPCFF3 now has an official host: http://www.clitoros.org/snpcff3/rom/

Does anyone know anything about hacking the music in ROMs? I've decided to play around with Mario 1 for my next hack...

There is a document by Sliver X related to hacking game music through NSF, and inserting it back to the rom. You can find the doc here.

Silver X wrote this little bit some years ago:

Music hacking is one of the more interesting aspects of rom hacking in my opinion, but it's tedious as hell.

Also here's an encouraging thing Silver X said in another thread about music hackingin SMB1:

"I've hacked the music in close to ten NES games, and with few exceptions* all of them were totally different in the ways they worked.
One of them was SMB1, in fact, and I have to tell you that it has the most frustrating format I've ever dealt with. I couldn't pull anything off in that ROM, since small changes would produce highly erratic results, sometimes even crashing the game itself. SMB2 and 3 have much more hacker-friendly formats to work with."

Don`t get scared by this sentence. Hacking music may actually be the best part of the rom hacking, it`s just little harder (or longer) to do.

That testicle flopping floating is the funnist thing I've seen this year.

Re: Wow.

Super Mario Bros 1 is a very hard format to hack. You can change the notes or timing and still get unstable results

In other words, since I want to totally change the soundtrack (all four songs of it), I'm probably looking at another year-long project. Decent...

I don't suppose anyone knows of someone who's archived the palettes used by every item/character in the game? I know of a reference that shows the eight different palettes used by the game, but a cursory run-thru showed enemies/items I swore had no counterpart in that palette.

In any case, I want to do some palette altering as well. There isn't nearly enough purple in these oldskool games...
